It all came together on Saturday when the biggest race of the year so far produced the biggest Beyer of 2020.
Although the scratches of Omaha Beach and Spun To Run robbed the race of some of its lustre – the purse cut to $3 million probably didn’t help on that score either – it was hard to fault the four-year-old in an authoritative performance for his first G1 score.
Mucho Gusto is now likely to run in the new Saudi Cup; he was bought by Saudi connections before the Pegasus. Gulfstream Park specialist Zulu Alpha, who won the Pegasus Turf, recorded a 105 Beyer for his rail-skimming success over Magic Wand. It’s the top Beyer so far this year on the lawn.
