• The week’s significant milestones
3,000 Bob Baffert
USA: A major career milestone for ‘Uncle Bob’ at Santa Anita on Saturday as Thousand Words won the G3 Robert E Lewis to become the 3,000th North American winner of a legendary career featuring five Kentucky Derby victories and a couple of Triple Crown winners. According to Equibase stats, Baffert stands at No.32 on the all-time list among US trainers, with the late Dale Baird at the top with 9,445. Baffert is third in prize-money terms with just over $297m (behind Todd Pletcher and Steve Asmussen).
27 Oisin Murphy
Japan: Britain’s champion jockey came to the end of his stint riding in Japan on a temporary licence at the weekend – but not before he had taken the nation by storm. Not content with having landed the Japan Cup on Suave Richard in December, Murphy leads the JRA title race with 27 winners after adding seven to his tally at the weekend.
1,000 Victor Carrasco
USA: Former Eclipse Award-winning apprentice Victor Carrasco joined the 1,000 club when he partnered Justin Front to victory at Laurel Park on Sunday January 26. “It’s a great feeling,” said Carrasco, who won 11 races in his native Puerto Rico before moving to the States. “After dealing with so many injuries and having some health issues and everything, it feels amazing.”
Qatar: The number of initial entries in the six races at the annual international meeting at Al Rayyan on February 21-22. Among them are no fewer than 105 foreign-trained horses, including subsequent G1 scorer French King, Royal Julius and Hunting Horn, the first three home 12 months ago in the $1m highlight, the HH The Amir Trophy.
