Fair Grounds (March 21): Muniz Memorial Classic (handicap) G2 $300,000, 1m1f, turf, 4yo+
Trainer: Brad Cox
Jockey: Shaun Bridgmohan
Owner: Gaining Ground Racing LLC
Pedigree: 5yo b g The Factor – Capricious Miss (Singspiel)

Following last month’s graded-stakes breakthrough over course and distance, Factor This repeated the dose on what proved to be the final card of the Fair Grounds winter meet before the coronavirus shutdown.

Carrying 8st 10lb under handicap conditions, Factor This produced a carbon copy of last month’s Fair Grounds Stakes victory as he wired the field in the Muniz Memorial.

In scoring a three-length victory over Dontblamerocket, the five-year-old provided the first leg of a G2 hat-trick for trainer Brad Cox, who went on to claim the Fair Grounds Oaks with Bonny South and the $1m Louisiana Derby with Wells Bayou.

Factor This has now won nine of his 28 career starts. “Big performance,” said Cox. “Looks like he almost broke the track record,” said the trainer.

The final time of 1m47.21s produced a Beyer speed figure of 104. The highest turf figure of 2020 remains Faction Cat’s 109 at Tampa Bay on February 22.
