+10 Tom Marquand
We’ve been writing a lot about Tom Marquand of late, so perhaps it is hardly surprising his Sydney exploits have earned him the mantle of star of the week on Thoroughbred Racing Commentary’s exclusive global rankings.
The hugely impressive 21-year-old’s high-profile double with his first G1 winner on Addeybb and G3 scorer Young Rascal on the Golden Slipper card at Rosehill on Saturday was enough for a big 10pt gain and catapulted him into the world Top 100 for the first time (#100 from #140).
Trainer William Haggas also got a 5pt bump (#25 from #29) but the most notable mover among the training ranks was Brad Cox, whose G2 hat-trick on what proved to be the final day of the Fair Grounds winter produced a 6pt gain and means he is now #6 (from #9).
Such has been Cox’s meteoric rise that his career-high placing, behind only Chad Brown and Bob Baffert in the US lists.
After a tortuous time in Hong Kong, dual South African champ Lyle Hewitson (+6pts, #98 from #113) is going great guns in Japan, where he rode Galore Creek to win the G2 Spring Stakes at Nakayama. Hong Kong Derby hero Vincent Ho also gets a 6pt jump (#53 from #62.)
