Oaklawn Park (April 11): Oaklawn Mile (Listed) $150,000, 1m, dirt, 4yo+
Trainer: Al Stall
Jockey: Joel Rosario
Owner: GMB Racing
Pedigree: 7yo b h Smart Strike – Julia Tuttle (Giant’s Causeway)

Given the paucity of opportunities elsewhere, it isn’t surprising that some of these races at Oaklawn are coming up mighty tough – among them this black-type contest featuring two G1 winners.

And what looked the best race of the week on paper produced the best Beyers as 4-5 favourite Tom’s D’Etat ran down fellow G1 scorer Improbable by three-quarters of a length.

The winner came five wide into the stretch before stopping the clock at 1m35.83s on wet-fast track – enough for a Beyer of 101.

Although his connections were mulling over the Saudi Cup at one stage, Tom’s D’Etat hasn’t run since landing the G1 Clark at Churchill Downs in the autumn. The Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland – a race won by his trainer when Blame held off Zenyatta – is the long-term target.
