A career-best performance from By My Standards to win the Oaklawn Handicap on Saturday’s showpiece card in Arkansas also produced the highest Beyer speed figure of the week with a 102.

Trainer Bret Calhoun is now plotting a course towards the Breeders’ Cup Classic for the four-year-old, who was recording a third G2 victory after last month’s New Orleans Classic at Fair Grounds and the 2019 Louisiana Derby at the same venue.

Owing to the paucity of opportunities elsewhere during the coronavirus crisis, virtually every race at Oaklawn has been rendered vastly more competitive than might reasonably have been forecast in a normal year.

Such was the case in a 13-runner Oaklawn Handicap in which top weight was carried by Saudi Cup fifth Tacitus and the favourite was Pegasus World Cup runner-up Mr Freeze.

By My Standards tracked the pace before overcoming front-running Warrior’s Charge in the stretch and scoring by a length and three-quarters in a race where it paid to race prominently.

He stopped the clock in 1m47.80s – faster than either division of the Arkansas Derby over the same 1m1f distance on the same card.

In those events, Charlatan recorded a Beyer of 96 – the first time he’s dipped below three digits – while stablemate Nadal got a 98, the same as hugely promising three-year-old filly Gamine achieved earlier on the card.

New Kentucky Oaks favourite Swiss Skydiver recorded a 99 Beyer on Friday’s card.
