Santa Anita (May 23): Daytona Stakes G3 $200,000, 5½f, turf, 4yo+
Trainer: Doug O’Neill
Jockey: Mike Smith
Owner: W.C. Racing Inc
Pedigree: 4yo b g Goldencents – Orientatious (Orientate)

After the reopening of Santa Anita last weekend following the coronavirus shutdown, the lawn was the place to be if you wanted to get a three-digit Beyer on Saturday’s card.

With close finishes in both stakes races, no fewer than seven horses hit the magical 100-mark, specifically the first four home in the Daytona Stakes and the first three in the G2 Charles Whittingham.

The favourite Wildman Jack touched off 70-1 longshot Sparky Ville in the former event and the pair could not be separated on the Beyer scale, where they both got a 104.

Though Beyers take no account of weight carried, Dubai G3 winner Wildman Jack also gets the nod here as he was carrying 2lb more in the 5½f contest, in which he rallied under a strong ride to catch his pacey rival in a time of 1m01.01s.

Breeders’ Cup Turf runner-up United achieved a 101 Beyer in the Charles Whittingham, where he nosed out late-running Rockemperor a nose. The runner-up was later demoted to third for leaning on Originaire; both horses got a 100 Beyer.
