It seems a while ago but last week’s best Beyer arrived on the Memorial Day bank holiday when Raging Bull rallied six wide for a convincing success in a red-hot edition of the Shoemaker Mile.

It had been a long time between drinks as he hadn’t won since his victory in the G1 Hollywood Derby at the end of his three-year-old campaign at Del Mar.

Yet though Raging Bull went winless in in 2019, he was never out of the frame in his five starts at the top level.

Even so, this decisive 2¼-length victory over a field featuring five fellow G1 scorers (among them Preakness Stakes hero War Of Will and Royal Ascot winner Without Parole) in the Shoe Mile suggested he is ready to take his form to a new level in 2020.

Fast ground and a fast pace see Raging Bull to optimum effect and he got both of those at Santa Anita, where he was produced from towards the rear to charge down the lane.

Worth noting, perhaps, that some of those behind had excuses. Runner-up Next Shares got squeezed up at the start and dropped right out in the early stages, for example, while the winner’s Chad Brown-trained stablemate Without Parole got no run on the rail.
