Churchill Downs (June 6): Aristides Stakes (Listed) $100,000, 6f, dirt, 4yo+
Trainer: Steve Asmussen
Jockey: Ricardo Santana
Owner: Phoenix Thoroughbreds III and Three Chimneys
Pedigree: 4yo gr/r c Violence – Melody Lady (Unbridled’s Song)

Volatile showed an explosive turn of foot in the stretch at Churchill Downs – and an eight-length victory produced an equally explosive Beyer speed figure at 112, the best of 2020 so far.

After attending the pace three wide, the lightly raced four-year-old – pronounced ‘Vol-uh-til’ by the racecaller – blew away his rivals in the stretch en route to clocking a time of 1m07.57s, just 0.2s off the track record, and this under a hand ride.

Volatile must soon be making his mark at a higher level after taking his career record to four out of five, having already produced a 101 Beyer on his seasonal debut following ankle chip surgery at Oaklawn in April.

“This horse has incredible talent,” said winning rider Ricardo Santana said. “To go that fast as he did today shows he is extremely talented. He did that so easily.”

Elsewhere, Vekoma’s seven-length romp in the rescheduled Carter Handicap over 7f at a sloppy Belmont produced a 110 Beyer, while Improbable notched 105 in the Hollywood Gold Cup.

Honor A.P.’s impressive Santa Anita Derby victory was validated with a 102 Beyer – the best figure for a three-year-old in 2020 who is not named Charlatan.

Code Of Honor and Newspaperofrecord both kicked off their four-year-old campaigns with three figures at Belmont.
