USA: A remarkable achievement at Belterra Park in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Thursday [June 25] when veteran jockey Perry Ouzts rode a five-timer on an eight-race card – at the age of 65!
Known as the ‘Ironman’, Arkansas-born Ouzts first ride (and win) came on Rablu at Beulah Park in Columbus, Ohio, 1973. He has 15 wins from 72 rides in 2020.
Ouzts had seven rides at Belterra on Thursday and scored on Quiet Dawn, Drama Run, My Pal Dal, Northern Journey and Aiken For Gold. His remaining two mounts came fourth and sixth.
Less than two weeks off his 66th birthday on July 7, Ouzts stands seventh on the all-time list for career victories in North America.
According to Equibase statistics, though he has never ridden a Graded-stakes winner, his career record stands at 7,076 wins from 51,283 rides for total prize-money of $46.7 million.
North American career victories: the top ten
He became only the seventh rider to partner 7,000 career winners (in America and Canada) at Belterra Park in September 2018 and leads the list among active jockeys, although Edgar Prado is hot on his tail.
All-time leader is Russell Baze, who retired in June 2016 with 12,842 victories on his home continent; he stands in second on the world list behind Brazilian legend Jorge Ricardo.
