Tom’s D’Etat just missed the track record in a dominant 4¼-length victory in the Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs on Saturday – in the process recording a notable Beyer speed figure of 109, the highest of the year at more than a mile.
Although the Stephen Foster lost its G1 status in 2019, this was a display worthy of the level as the seven-year-old chased the pace before poking his nose in front on the far turn and then drawing away under a hand ride to claim this ‘Win and you’re in’ race for the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
A final time of 1m47.30s was just .02s off Victory Gallop’s 1999 track record, and it was also significantly faster than champion filly Midnight Bisou recorded over the same course and distance half an hour earlier in the Fleur de Lis. The Saudi Cup runner-up stopped the clock in 1m48.99s for a Beyer of 93.
With a career record of 11 wins from 18 starts, Tom’s D’Etat was completing a stakes-race four-timer (among them the G1 Clark). His trainer Al Stall will presumably be eyeing the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland, a race he won when the 2010 Stephen Foster winner Blame held off Zenyatta’s despairing late lunge at Churchill Downs.
