• The week’s top Beyer speed figure in North America
Belmont Park (July 4): Metropolitan Hcap G1 $500,000, 1m, dirt, 3yo+
Trainer: George Weaver
Jockey: Javier Castellano
Owner: RA Hill Stable & Gatsas Stable
Pedigree: 4yo ch c Candy Ride – Mona De Momma (Speightstown)
You can’t blame owner Randy Hill for his exuberance after Vekoma completed back-to-back G1 victories with a solid effort over a competitive field in the Met Mile – even if his assertion that the four-year-old is “the best horse in America right now” seems a little over the top.
Then again, Maximum Security has to prove it all over again, Midnight Bisou is a mare, Tom’s D’Etat has achieved less than Vekoma and Tiz The Law looks best of the muddled three-year-old crop.
So Vekoma is at least in the argument. And while it wasn’t startling, there was much to like about his Belmont Park display as he showed enough early speed to beat sprint types to the front and then had enough in reserve to hold off Network Effect and Code Of Honor for a length-and-a-quarter victory.
Winning time was 1m 32.88s – enough for a Beyer speed figure of 104. Not quite as good as the 110 he got for his Carter Handicap romp over 7f in early June, but still his third three-digit offering during his unbeaten three-race 2020 campaign.
