• The week’s top Beyer speed figure in North America
103 Admiral Lynch
Saratoga (July 23): allowance optional claimer $78,000 6½f, dirt, 3yo+
Trainer: Michael Maker
Jockey: Irad Ortiz
Owner: Michael Dubb & Bethlehem Stables LLC
Pedigree: 4yo b c Super Saver – Golden Production (Exchange Rate)
It wasn’t Maximum Security (101) and it wasn’t Volatile (102). Rather, last week’s highest Beyer speed figure came from the four-year-old Admiral Lynch, who hit 103 when taking a high-level optional claimer on Thursday at Saratoga.
One of five winners on the card for Irad Ortiz, the son of Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver was scoring for the first time for trainer Mike Maker after leaving the barn of Jason Servis, one of the trainers implicated in the doping storm that has rocked US racing.
Indeed, Admiral Lynch is notable because he also numbers Jorge Navarro – also charged by the FBI – among his former trainers.
On his last start for Servis, he had finished runner-up in a G3 at Gulfstream Park in February before joining his current trainer, for whom he was making his third start.
After tracking the pace at Saratoga, Admiral Lynch took over exiting the far turn and then easily held the favourite Honest Mischief to score going away by 4¼ lengths in a time of 1m15.11s for his fourth career success.
