• The week’s top Beyer speed figure in North America
109 Tiz The Law
Saratoga (August 8): Travers Stakes G1 $1m, 1m2f, dirt, 3yo
Trainer: Barclay Tagg
Jockey: Manny Franco
Owner: Sackatoga Stable
Pedigree: 3yo b c Constitution – Tizfiz (Tiznow)
It all makes perfect sense this week as the best three-year-old in America produced the best performance by a three-year-old colt in 2020 – and duly recorded the best Beyer of the year by a three-year-old colt.
We are talking about Kentucky Derby favourite Tiz The Law, of course, who stretched his unbeaten sequence to four in 2020 with his sensational display to win the Travers Stakes.
A formidable Beyer of 109 is easily the highest of his career, matched by only a handful of horses this year – and, perhaps significantly, nine points above the 100 achieved by Kentucky Derby second favourite Art Collector in Sunday’s Eliis Park Derby.
Tiz The Law’s figure, however, is not the highest achieved in 2020 by any three-year-old as Gamine hit 110 in the Acorn Stakes at Belmont.
The spectacular Bob Baffert-trained filly was awarded 108 for her Test Stakes victory on the Travers undercard. She runs next in the Kentucky Oaks over two furlongs further on September 4.
