Churchill Downs (September 5): Kentucky Derby G1 $3m, 1m2f, dirt, 3yo
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Jockey: John Velazquez
Owner: Spendthrift Farm LLC, Myracehorse.com, Madaket Stables LLC and Starlight Racing
Pedigree: 3yo bc Into Mischief – Flawless (Mr. Greeley)

Front-running Kentucky Derby winner Authentic recorded last week’s top Beyer with a 105 for his decisive success at Churchill Downs.

The figure represents a Beyer improvement of four points on his previous best, the 101 he recorded in the Haskell, while beaten favourite Tiz The Law is adjudged to have regressed 6lb from his season’s best [109 in the Travers] to 103.

Although Authentic was able to dictate the fractions – optimum conditions for producing a speed figure – he didn’t have it all his own way as he missed the kick a fraction from the outside gate and had to be ridden to establish a lead by the first turn.

Surprise Kentucky Oaks winner Shedaresthedevil was awarded 101 after stunning Swiss Skydiver and Gamine. Both the vanquished fillies have bettered that number elsewhere this season – in Gamine’s case, very easily, as she holds the top three-year-old figure of the entire year with her 110 from the Acorn Stakes.

Digital Age, the longest-priced of three Chad Brown runners in the Old Forester Turf Classic on the Derby undercard, also hit 105 for his three-quarter length victory over Factor This as he made his G1 breakthrough in the $1m contest.
