Australia: Who is the greatest racehorse? Winx, Frankel, Secretariat, Deep Impact … or Phar Lap? An innovative attempt will be made to settle age old arguments with the staging of a unique Cox Plate, the first virtual horse race to be run in Australia.

To mark the 100th running of the Ladbrokes Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on Saturday, the race sponsor has joined with the Victoria Racing Club and Moonee Valley Racing Club to try to settle any wrangling with technology.

The Ladbrokes Greatest Ever Cox Plate will pay tribute to Australia’s most famous weight-for-age race with a virtual contest featuring its most celebrated winners, including four-time winner Winx and other iconic names such as Phar Lap, Tulloch and Kingston Town.

And the real thing … the Cox Plate takeaway: Sir Dragonet haunts Ballydoyle – plus COVID-19 fine for jockey Glen Boss

But there is a twist as the 14-runner field also includes European great Frankel, US Triple Crown-winning legend Secretariat and Japanese superstar Deep Impact – horses who didn’t even run in the Cox Plate.

The race has been created by Inspired Entertainment, the UK-based leaders in sports animation who were behind the virtual Grand National and virtual Kentucky Derby, using historical data researched by Timeform.

It will be run on the eve of the Ladbrokes Cox Plate itself and shown live at 10.25GMT (8.25pm in Australia) on Friday October 23 on Channel 7 in Australia.

Ladbrokes Greatest Ever Cox Plate betting (Ladbrokes): 7-2 Winx, 9-2 Frankel, 5 Phar Lap, 6 Secretariat, 7 Tulloch, 9 Kingston Town, 14 Deep Impact, 16 Might And Power, So You Think, 25 Dulcify, Tobin Bronze, Sunline, 33 Gunsynd, 40 Northerly
