Saturday’s annual Empire Showcase Day card at Belmont Park featured an array of valuable races restricted to New York state-bred horses – and therefore ineligible for any graded status.
Hard-knocking six-year-old Mr. Buff completed back-to-back successes with a front-running effort in the main event. the Empire Classic Handicap, but Somelikeithotbrown took the laurels on the Beyer scale with 105 for his victory on the turf in the Mohawk Stakes.
Given some of his previous efforts, the four-year-old had every right to be sent off a warmish favourite – he won the G2 Bernard Baruch Handicap at Saratoga in the summer before also hitting a 105 behind Breeders’ Cup-bound Factor This on the Preakness undercard at Pimlico.
Aggressively ridden to wrestle the lead from pace rival Rinaldi, the son of Big Brown was forced into some taxing early fractions before staying on resolutely to hold Therapist for a 1½-length victory in a final time of 1m42.02s
