• The week’s top Beyer speed figure in North America
Del Mar (Nov 27): Hollywood Turf Cup G2 $200,000, 1m4f, turf, 3yo+
Trainer: Brad Cox
Jockey: Joel Rosario
Owner: Donegal Racing, Joseph Bulger & Peter Coneway
Pedigree: 6yo bh Arch – Unbridled Empire (Empire Maker)
Arklow’s name must surely be in the mix in any discussion of North America’s leading middle-distance turf performers and the six-year-old added to his laurels when raiding California from his Kentucky base to win the Hollywood Turf Cup.
Admittedly, this isn’t the race it was, having been downgraded from the top level in 2012, but it nevertheless featured a competitive enough double-figure field.
Sent off 19-10 favourite, Arklow stalked the pace set by Acclimate before taking over in the stretch and holding off Laccario by a half-length with strong-finishing Say The Word claiming third.
The final time was 2m26.31 – just off the course record set by Talismanic at the Breeders’ Cup in 2017 – and worth a Beyer figure of 104. That number equalled Arklow’s mark in last month’s Breeders’ Cup Turf at Keeneland, where he was only sixth behind Tarnawa.
The veteran turfer, who scored at G1 level in the 2019 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic, wasn’t the only Brad Cox trainee to hit a 104 Beyer over the weekend. The Sound, a three-year-old son of Hard Spun, did the same when wiring the field in a mile allowance at Aqueduct on Sunday [Nov 29].
Also notable was Bodexpress, who featured in this spot a few weeks ago with a 102 Beyer in minor company at Gulfstream Park West.
He improved to 103 on Friday at Churchill Downs, when he won the G1 Clark – at odds of nearly 12-1. The Pegasus World Cup beckons.
