• The week’s top Beyer speed figure in North America
Santa Anita (Jan 2): San Gabriel Stakes G2 $200,000, 1m1f, turf, 4yo+
Trainer: Peter Miller
Jockey: Joel Rosario
Owner: Peter Redekop BC Ltd
Pedigree: 5yo b/br h Scat Daddy – Imprecation (First Defence)
With a pair of graded-stakes winners over the weekend, trainer Peter Miller returned to form in no uncertain fashion over the New Year’s holiday at Santa Anita.
Hembree came from last to first in G2 company on Friday, while Anothertwistafate raced more prominently on Saturday’s card to record last week’s highest Beyer of 103 with a 2¼-length victory in the G2 San Gabriel.
Newly turned five, the son of Scat Daddy stalked lone leader Bob And Jackie before moving up on the far turn and then getting the better of that rival inside the final furlong in a time of 1m46.63s.
Tenth of 13 in the Preakness of 2019, Anothertwistafate’s career record strike rate now stands at 50% – or five wins from ten starts. Previous victories include the G3 Longacres Mile at Emerald Downs in October.
Kentucky Derby contender Life Is Good recorded a 101 Beyer in winning the Sham Stakes on the same card. The figure is the highest achieved so far any horse of his generation, beating last year’s leading two-year-old figure of 100 by Jackie’s Warrior in the Champagne Stakes.
