While you would expect the numbers to go up at the Pegasus this weekend, a Beyer speed figure of 103 seems to be the upper benchmark in the early weeks of 2021.
Four horses have now recorded 103 Beyers since the turn of the year: Anothertwistafate (Santa Anita, Jan 2) and Mischievous Alex (Gulfstream Park, Jan 10) plus ) and Last Judgment (Gulfstream Park, Jan 16) and Enforceable (Fair Grounds, Jan 17) over last weekend.
Stretched out from sprint trips in the Sunshine Classic restricted to Florida-breds, Last Judgment made the most of his natural speed at Gulfstream. Hustled to the lead by Jose Ortiz, he set the pace before kicking away for a comfortable 6½-length victory on his second start since being claimed in New York by his current connections.
Enforceable regained the winning thread in a salty allowance on his four-year-old bow back at the venue where he had won the G3 Lecomte 12 months previously.
Highly tried as a three-year-old, the son of Tapit rallied four wide before an eyecatching eight-length win over 2019 UAE Derby winner Plus Que Parfait with Godolphin’s 6-5 favourite Spa City only third.
He was ridden by former British-based jockey Adam Beschizza, for whom he had been a first Kentucky Derby mount when seventh behind Authentic at Churchill Downs in September.
