Well, well, well, something in that west-coast air certainly seems to agree with Charmaine’s Mia, who has now won graded stakes on both starts since joining Californian-based Phil d’Amato.

Although the five-year-old had won four races in her previous life, none of them had been above allowance level and she had seemingly been found out in lesser stakes in Canada.

Now, though, her speed figures have taken a step in the right direction. After a 98 BSF for her 6f victory in the G3 Las Cienagas in early January, she stepped up a couple of furlongs to move up a grade in the Buena Vista.

Sent off 13-10 favourite, she stalked longshot Bohemian Bourbon in the early going before inheriting the lead exiting the far turn and scoring by a length over late-running G1 winner Mucho Unusual in an unfussy effort

“Flavien said there’s more in the tank,” commented the winning trainer. “She rated nice – if she needed to go a little further, it wasn’t a problem. So that definitely broadens her horizons and maybe has us starting to look at Grade 1s.”
