Keeneland (April 9): Maker’s Mark Mile G1 $300,000, 1m, turf, 4yo+
Trainer: Chad Brown
Jockey: Irad Ortiz
Owner: Peter M Brant
Pedigree: 6 bh Dark Angel – Rosa Bonheur (Mr Greeley)
Time: 1m33.86s

Going back to his three-year-old days when he won the Hollywood Derby at Del Mar, Raging Bull has long since flattered to deceive as a potential top-notcher.

Sure, he is always there or thereabouts, and after a string of placed efforts, he won another G1 at Santa Anita in May 2020 – but he was unable to follow that up, failing to score until last week’s Maker’s Mark Mile.

Again, the son of Dark Angel looked highly impressive at Keeneland. Settled in mid-division on the rail a few lengths back of a hot pace, he surged inside rivals on the far turn to be produced with a decisive effort into the home stretch.

Raging Bull appeared much the best in a competitive field and duly won by two lengths over late-running Ride A Comet (challenged seven wide from the rear) for a nice three-digit Beyer. The question is: can he break recent habits and win next time as well? Though he has won seven of his 18 career starts, he hasn’t won two in a row since landing four of his first five races in 2018.
