Front-running Beau Liam just held off Witsel in a hot-looking allowance contest at Saratoga on Saturday after which both three-year-olds were awarded 106 BSFs, the highest number of the week.

The pair were six lengths clear of third-placed Mahaamel, but as Beau Liam got the nod, he gets title billing in our weekly Beyers slot.

Trained by Steve Asmussen, the son of Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Liam’s Map was taking his career record to two wins in as many starts, having broken his maiden at first asking on May 29 at Churchill Downs.

Made an even-money favourite, the Stonestreet homebred broke well on a Saratoga track rated ‘good’ before setting a pressured pace and then responding when called upon in the straight. Under a strong drive a furlong out, he held on gamely from Chad Brown’s runner-up Witsel, who had joined issue in the stretch.

Elsewhere at the weekend, first-past-the-post Hot Rod Charlie and promoted winner Mandaloun both got a BSF of 102 for their Haskell efforts, while Wit’s eight-length power play in the G3 Sanford catapulted him near towards the top end of the two-year-old division with a 90.

Even better on the figures, though, was the 92 BSF achieved by Asmussen-trained juvenile Echo Zulu on debut in a maiden special weight at Saratoga on Thursday [July 15].
