107 Jackie’s Warrior
Saratoga (August 28): H Allen Jerkens Memorial G1 $500,000, 7f, dirt, 3yo
Twice a G1 winner at two, Jackie’s Warrior added further top-level success here with yet another impressive display. After chasing the leader Life Is Good, the Steve Asmussen-trained colt took over a couple of furlongs out and was always just holding the runner-up’s renewed effort as he scored by a neck.
Mind you, this was a noteworthy effort from Life Is Good, awarded a 106 BSF on his return after a six-month layoff with new trainer Todd Pletcher following the setback that knocked him out of Bob Baffert’s Triple Crown team. He’s already got a 107 under his belt. It could be quite a rematch if the pair meet again in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.
Asmussen also saddled Yaupon (103) to win the Forego while Baffert’s superstar filly Gamine (104) continued on her merry way in the Ballerina.
107 Essential Quality (won) and Midnight Bourbon (2nd)
Saratoga (August 29) Travers Stakes G1 $1.25m, 1m2f, dirt, 3yo
A neck separated Essential Quality and Midnight Bourbon after their Travers Stakes duel but nothing separated them on the Beyer scale, with both horses hitting this week’s high of 107 as they pulled five lengths clear of the third.
Midnight Bourbon had the run of the race but Essential Quality is a tough customer as he demonstrated here in overcoming a stubborn rival to take his career record to eight out of nine. The Breeders’ Cup Classic remains the obvious target.

107 Beau Liam
Saratoga (August 29): allowance optional claimer 6½f, dirt, 3yo+
Three out of three now for Beau Liam, who continues to produce eyecatching performances as he moves through the grades.
After his 106 BSF last time for a narrow victory in allowance company at this venue, he was untroubled to improve his Beyer to 107 in a six-length victory at odds of 2-5. Next time, surely, trainer Steve Asmussen will be looking at graded stakes.
… and in case you were wondering, Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit notched a 100 BSF when scoring on his comeback in stakes company at Del Mar on Sunday.
