Kentucky Downs (Sept 11): FanDuel Turf Sprint $1m, G3 $252,000, 6f, turf, 3yo+
Trainer: Rusty Arnold
Jockey: Jose Lezcano
Owner: Calumet Farm
Pedigree: 4 bc Twirling Candy – Switching Gears (Tapit)
Time: 1m07.90s

With his fourth win from eight starts in 2021, Gear Jockey earned a place in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint with a convincing performance in this ‘Win and You’re In’ contest.

After racing close to the pace, the four-year-old took control in the straight before scoring by 2½ lengths over late-running Diamond Oops and a solid capacity field of 12 runners further behind in this $1m feature.

The FanDuel Turf Sprint was the only 6f event run at the lucrative six-day meet at Kentucky Downs, an idiosyncratic track by US standards – turf-only, kidney-shaped and built more to European designs.

Gear Jockey’s time of 1m07.90s was reportedly the fastest at the 6f trip at the venue, either under its current name or in its former guise as Dueling Grounds. A BSF of 105 is only a point off the year’s best on turf, achieved by G1 winners Raging Bull and Domestic Spending.
