Japan: Japanese race fans who can’t get enough of former superstar racemare Almond Eye have underlined their devotion by putting their hands in their pockets for her shoes.

Ten months after she brought the curtain down on an illustrious career with victory in the Japan Cup, a monster sum of ¥8,561,521 (£57,000) has been raised following the sale of four of her race shoes.

Northern Farm framed the set of plates, with nails, which she wore in her 2019 G1 Dubai Turf victory and put them up for auction. All the proceeds are going to racehorse aftercare.

Almond Eye earned a place in Japanese history by becoming the first horse to win nine G1s on turf, for which she was recognised by being named 2020 Horse of the Year in the Japan Racing Association Awards for the second time.

Her ninth top flight success was achieved in fitting style when she beat colt and filly Japanese Triple Crown winners in the Japan Cup.
