GB: Spanish football star Alvaro Odriozola used the October international break to indulge in his main passion – horse racing.
The right-back, who has four caps for his country, is currently on a one-year loan to Fiorentina from his parent club Real Madrid, having spent much of last term with Bayern Munich. He added to his team of horses by spending 120,000gns on a yearling filly by Nathaniel – sire of his favourite horse, dual Arc-winner Enable – out of G3 winner Mix And Mingle at Tattersalls in Newmarket.
“We’ve been really lucky to get the Nathaniel filly,” Odriozola told Tattersalls TV. “It’s a stallion that I really like, the kind of middle-distance horses which are the best for me.
“Of course he was the sire of Enable, a filly that I was in love to. We are really excited and hopefully she can be a really good filly.”
The filly was knocked down to Caudra Bernardo, who runs Odriozola’s stable of horses in San Sebastian, Spain, but he also has horses with Joseph O’Brien, including Gaheris, who gave him his first winner in Ireland this year.
“I have horses with Joseph in Ireland,” he said. “I haven’t had my own horses in the UK but I have a filly with some friends from football, Thomas Muller and Claudio Pizarro, who is trained by Tom Clover. Most of my horses are in Spain.
“We are just getting started. My main goal in the future is to breed so from now I think we will focus on fillies to race them and after breed from them because that is my passion. I hope to come here for many years to come.”
