USA Late rides for Dettori as Breeders’ Cup fields announced

Frankie Dettori will have three rides at the Breeders’ Cup after picking up mounts for Aidan O’Brien and Godolphin as the post- position draw took place at Del Mar on Monday.

The 14-time Breeders’ Cup winner will partner Broome in the Breeders’ Cup Turf, where Ryan Moore will be on Japan after neither stablemates Bolshoi Ballet nor Mogul drew into the field, despite Love being switched to the Filly & Mare Turf.

Dettori’s other rides will be on the Charlie Appleby-trained Albahr in the Juvenile Turf after James Doyle was released to ride the Hugo Palmer-trained morning-line favourite Dubawi Legend. William Buick will ride Modern Games. Dettori’s other mount will be on the Argentine filly Blue Stripe in the Distaff.

Australia Watch Verry Elleegant win Melbourne Cup

Australia’s horse of the year Verry Elleegant took her G1 score to ten with an outstanding performance to win the Lexus Melbourne Cup, providing both trainer Chris Waller and jockey James McDonald with their first victory in the race. Hot favourite Incentivise finished second, with Britain’s Spanish Mission third.

GB Stradivarius stays in training

Stradivarius will race on in 2022, with John Gosden set to target the superstar stayer at three races. Winning a fourth Gold Cup at Royal Ascot will be the priority. The seven-time G1 winner was foiled in the attempt to equal Yeats this year when he got caught in traffic and was left with too much to do to catch Subjectivist.

Ireland Kevin Manning breaks collarbone

Veteran jockey Kevin Manning, who rode Poetic Flare to G1 wins in the 2,000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes this year, suffered a premature end to his season after breaking his collarbone when his mount slipped and fell at Galway.

USA Trevor Denman to miss Del Mar after fall

Del Mar will be missing its commentator of the last 50 years after Trevor Denman slipped and fell down the stairs of a deck at his home in Minnesota, injuring his back. Larry Collmus, who deputised when Denman was unable to travel due to Covid-19 restrictions, will stand in for the majority of the Bing Crosby meet, which also hosts the Breeders’ Cup.

Australia Apprentice in induced coma after fall

Award-winning apprentice jockey Hannah Fitzgerald is in an induced coma in hospital in Perth after suffering a serious head injury when coming off her mount at the end of a race at Kalgoorlie.

The 2020 Melbourne Cup runner-up Tiger Moth is heading to Turkey to become a stallion after being sold for 20,000gns at the Tattersalls Autumn horses-in-training sale. The son of Galileo, who was beaten a head in the Irish Derby, ran only once for Aidan O’Brien in 2021.
