109 Hollis

Oaklawn Park (Dec 10): allowance optional claimer $102,000, 5½f, dirt, 3yo+
Trainer: Johnny Ortiz
Jockey: Ricardo Santana
Owner: WSS Racing and 4G Racing
Pedigree: 6 b g Street Sense – Miss Inclined (Pulpit)
Time: 1m02.17s

Returning to action after nearly 12 months on the sidelines, Nashville was sent off 1-5 favourite to score dropped back into allowance company at Oaklawn Park.

The Steve Asmussen-trained four-year-old was unseen since ankle chip surgery after losing his unbeaten record in the G1 Malibu in December 2020. He duly made the lead – but could not withstand 4.6-1 shot Hollis, who stunned the favourite in a track-record effort.

The six-year-old gelding broke well before laying off Nashville and then renewing his effort as they exited the turn. He had little trouble overcoming his rival and was kicked sharply clear to win by 4½ lengths in a blistering 1m02.17s – good enough for a huge 109 BSF.

Claimed for $40,000 by trainer Johnny Ortiz in May 2020, the gelded son of Street Sense has a career record of nine wins from 22 starts. Though he has never won a graded stakes, he did dead-heat in a black-type contest at Sam Houston in January and had previously won a Listed sprint at Pimlico.

“Hollis is a very special horse in our barn,” said Ortiz. “He’s got a personality like no other. We call him, ‘The Scrapper’; we call him ‘The Boxer’. He wants to be in a fight. He’ll take the fight to his competition.”

Nashville is quite a scalp as well – he broke the track record for 6f on Keeneland’s golden highway on the Breeders’ Cup undercard in 2020.
